Reach Alcance Edition 17 | Gibraltar’s Multimillion £ Cruising Industry

Unfortunately not a trace of this source of wealth finds its way into the Camp de Gibraltar or even La Linea, the neighbouring city which could well complement what Gibraltar has to offer and could benefit from this massive influx of visitors. The key is in fluidity at the frontier.

However as is well known politics does not always procure the welfare of citizens and the means to use all means to that end and which are sometimes subsumed to interests which have nothing to do with the common good.

In the words of St. Augustine: “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page”. Since these wise words were said by a father and doctor of the Church in the 5th century AD we can confidently say that for a long time travel has been recommended as a means of knowing other places, other people and learning other values and also for the pockets of those fortunate enough to be able to offer the wandering spirit and curiosity of today’s traveller.

In this edition of Reach we offer a detailed appraisal of the economic impact to Gibraltar of being an internationally recognised cruise ship destination and point of reference to the major cruise companies of the world.

It is heartening to note how the Gibraltar brand attracted 254 cruise ships last year, some 400,000 passengers who brought £16.7 million into the local economy. A stunning figure which reflects the economic benefits to Gibraltar of promoting a source of income which keeps on growing and employs many people.

The late lamented socialist mayor of La Linea Francisco Niebla used to say that having Gibraltar next door was like having Disneyworld but only to look at and not enjoy. It is certainly there but for some it is as if it weren’t.
